Curb appeal is the visual attractiveness of a house as seen from the street.
According to a 2013 Survey from the National Association of Realtors, curb appeal is important to 71% of home buyers when choosing a home.
Making sure that your home’s curb appeal is attractive and inviting is an important aspect in selling your home. Curb appeal is very important because it forms potential buyers’ first impression of your home. Buyers tend to associate the condition of the exterior with the condition of the interior.
Your first step is to evaluate the curb appeal of your home.
Walk to the street and take a look at the front of your home. Is the grass green and well kept? Are the shrubs and trees pruned properly? Is the walkway clear of debris and easily accessible? Do any areas of the house need to be repainted? Are the home address numbers visible?
After evaluating your property, you can then focus on enhancing the appeal of your home. Here are some tips:
- Clean all exterior windows and gutters
- Pressure wash any dirty exterior siding or stucco as well as the walkway or driveway
- Mow the lawn and remove any weeds and leaves
- Edge sidewalks and walkways and remove any grass or weeds that are growing between concrete or bricks
- Trim any overgrown shrubs or trees
- Stow away unnecessary garden implements, tools, kids toys, furniture..etc.
- Make sure all exterior light fixtures are working properly
You do not need to spend thousands of dollars landscaping your home. However, by investing only a few hundred dollars could make a huge difference to a buyer.
You may want to add colorful, flowering plants along walkways, in the front bed or on the front porch of your home. Yellow or red flowers tend to draw the eye, and potential buyers will feel immediately welcome.
You may need to add some new mulch. Mulch instantly makes a property look well-kept. There are many different colors of mulch to choose from that can accent the exterior color of your home.
You may consider painting your front door. The front door is the gateway to your home so it is important that it is in good condition and looks appealing. You may want to choose a color that stands out from the rest of your house but a color that also meshes well with the rest of your color scheme.
